The sales group of an oilfield service company saw a major gap in their deep water Gulf of Mexico (GOM) high-pressure portfolio. They needed to increase the pressure rating of their openhole logging suite in order to compete with the market leader in deep water GOM. This enhancement in functionality would help them gain market share in the Gulf of Mexico, as at the time they did not have a logging technology that could operate in the high-pressure environment—the only piece missing from their existing portfolio. The lack of a deep water logging tool kept them from being able to bid on many other jobs in the multibillion dollar deep water market. The challenge was that their in-house engineering teams were already assigned to other projects, and it was important that the sales team could react quickly so that they could participate in the lucrative ultra-high pressure deep water market. Every day that went by was one more day of lost revenue for the client.
Using its ReAct™ accelerated product commercialization and life-cycle extension service, National K Works (NKW) was able to respond immediately to the customer's request. NKW worked hand in hand with the client's engineering team, developing discrete components of the logging technology that would increase its pressure rating. Namely, to design the mechanical tool joints for the high-pressure housings while the client's engineering team focused on engineering sensors and electronics, enabling the in-house engineering team to play to their strengths. The expedited project timeline was six months vs. the previously scheduled 12 month timeline that had been planned.
The ReAct™ accelerated product commercialization and life-cycle extension service encompasses expert mechanical engineering and robust manufacturing and pressure testing capabilities, all working concurrently with each other and the client, drastically reducing time to market. NKW engineered the product upgrade using the client's exacting engineering standards, supplying the complete documentation and drawings, just as if the project were done in-house. NKW also purchased material, manufactured the new components, assembled the tools and tested all of the components concurrently while the client was working on the sensor and electronics engineering. The client's engineering team participated in every stage-gate review along the way to ensure their satisfaction with work quality and timeline progess.
By using the ReAct™ service, NKW was able to reduce the typical time to market by half. The logging technology was deployed to the field and immediately started generating revenue. The customer soon grew with its new complete ultra-high pressure deepwater portfolio.
As a result of this success, the NKW-designed mechanical tool joints for high-pressure housings are now the standard tool joints for all of the customer's high-pressure logging tools.
